At the Pakistani American Voters Association (PAVA), we are proud to support individuals from our community who are exploring a path into public service. Whether you’re thinking about running for City Council, MUD Board, School Board, County Office, or even higher office—there are essential questions and realities you should consider before making that decision.

This page is not meant to discourage you, but to help you make an informed choice and prepare effectively. The better prepared you are before declaring your candidacy, the greater your chances of running a successful and meaningful campaign.

General Questions to Ask Yourself Before Running

  • Why do I want to run for office?
  • What is the role of the position I am considering, and how does it impact the community?
  • Do I have relevant experience or involvement in the issues this office oversees?
  • What are the most pressing issues facing the constituents of this district?
  • What relationships do I have (or need to build) within the community, local organizations, and party leadership?
  • Am I prepared to balance public scrutiny, time commitment, and possibly the financial cost?
  • Do I have a support system—family, friends, mentors—who will help me through the journey?
  • Have I ever attended meetings of the board or council I want to join?
  • Do I have the time to attend community events, civic forums, and political meetings consistently?
  • What are the ethical, legal, or financial disclosures required to run?

Key Questions:

  • Am I known in my neighborhood or district through past service, HOA participation, or civic work?

 Start Today: Volunteer on a local board or city advisory commission; attend and speak at council meetings.

Estimated Budget Range: $5,000 – $50,000
(Dependent on district size and local engagement; larger ISDs may run competitive races.)

Key Questions:

  • Have I been involved in school activities, PTA, or education advocacy?
  • Do I understand school budgeting, curriculum policy, and teacher/student needs?
  • Am I prepared to make decisions that may face public scrutiny?
  • Can I communicate effectively with parents, teachers, and district administrators?

Start Today: Join your school district’s community advisory boards or attend school board meetings.

Estimated Budget Range: $1,000 – $10,000
(Often low-cost but can vary depending on MUD size and election turnout.)

Key Questions:

  • Do I understand how utility and water services are managed in my area?
  • Do I have a financial or engineering background that supports informed decisions on infrastructure?
  • Am I willing to attend board meetings and read technical reports?

Start Today: Research your local MUD, attend a few board meetings, and get to know the current board members.

Estimated Budget Range: $25,000 – $100,000+
(Higher-profile precincts and competitive areas may require more.)

Key Questions:

  • Do I understand the duties of the office (e.g., law enforcement, dispute resolution)?
  • Do I have connections with local party leadership or community influencers?
  • Am I familiar with the legal, administrative, or public service components of the role?

Start Today: Attend party precinct meetings, volunteer with elected officials, and build relationships in your area.

(Dependent on county size, incumbent strength, and media exposure.)

  • Do I have name recognition or the ability to build it quickly?
  • Am I ready to campaign across the entire county with diverse communities?
  • Can I fundraise effectively and sustain a long campaign cycle?
  • Do I have a track record of public service or executive management?

(Heavily dependent on district competitiveness and fundraising ability.)

Key Questions:

  • Am I familiar with legislative priorities at the state level?
  • Do I have relationships with local, county, and state political figures?
  • Can I fundraise from donors inside and outside the district?
  • Do I have a clear platform that appeals to a broad base of voters?

Start Today: Work with your local party chapter, attend state conventions, and start building a donor and volunteer base.

(Depending on the district, incumbency, and national party involvement.)

Key Questions:

  • Do I have deep political, legislative, or community leadership experience?
  • Am I comfortable with national media exposure, scrutiny, and extended time away from home?
  • Do I have a robust and experienced team to manage a large-scale campaign?
  • Can I sustain a demanding fundraising operation and engage national stakeholders?
