Congressman Al Green Threatens Lawsuit Over Texas Redistricting Plan
In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, Congressman Al Green has vowed to file a federal lawsuit and potentially introduce new articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump over Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s controversial redistricting proposal.
The redistricting plan — a key part of the governor’s agenda for the upcoming special legislative session — targets four congressional districts, three of which are represented by Democrats of color based in Houston and Fort Worth.
Calling the plan racially discriminatory and unconstitutional, Green accused the Trump administration of pressuring state officials to redraw the maps mid-decade in a move that he says undermines democracy and voter representation.
The U.S. Department of Justice recently issued a letter identifying the four districts as “unconstitutional racial gerrymanders”, warning Texas to redraw the boundaries or face legal action.
The four districts include:
🔹 Rep. Al Green (Houston)
🔹 Rep. Sylvia Garcia (Houston)
🔹 Rep. Marc Veasey (Fort Worth)
🔹 A vacant seat most recently held by the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, former mayor of Houston
Turner passed away in March, and Governor Abbott scheduled a special election in November to fill his seat — a decision sharply criticized by Democrats who say the election should have been held in May to ensure timely representation.
Green stated:
“This is not just about redrawing lines — this is about erasing voices. If the state goes forward with this racially motivated map, I will take it to court. And if needed, I will reintroduce articles of impeachment against those responsible for manipulating democracy.”
This showdown sets the stage for a high-stakes legal and political battle in Texas, one that could have national implications for voting rights and racial justice.
